The 18th century

An exquisite selection of 18th century painting spans most of the period. From Hendrick Kock’s mythological portrayal of Pan and Syrinx (1722) to Jens Juel’s end-of-century portraits of the bourgeouisie. Emphasis is on the latter part of the period and the collection is reflective of the major styles and philosophical currents of the age.

Whereas Johannes Wiedewelt’s medallions and Bertel Thorvaldsen’s busts are prime examples of Neoclassicism, much of the focus is on the Romantic period as represented by minor masterpieces from the hands of N. A. Abildgaard, Jens Juel and Erik Pauelsen.
